Our local Council are getting their act together re disabled egress and  are
looking to provide "EVAC" chairs or similar.
Is anyone aware of alternative chair equipment that might be on the
market with possible links etc?

I know FERNO do the sirrocco www.ferno.co.uk/products/shopdisplayproductsF.asp?id=9&cat=Carry+Chairs

and the Stepper.

Both are still the best part of £1k each though.

Unlike the Evac-chair, you don't sink down into the bottom of it, so is less off putting

An evacuation chair I have in place at the moment is 'Van Leeuwen. it is produced in Noway, but approved and distibuted here.  Their website is:www.vanleeuwencompanies.com    I have found it compares favourably.  However, It is no good just putting them in place and giving one training session; staff change and whilst they are simple to use, the first time user would have problems, particuarly in a fire situation.  Sorry If that sounded like teaching granny to suck eggs, but it happened to me with not checking on staff changes.

Are there any recognised standards relating to construction and/or design of these chairs?

Evac chairs are good - but remember that they can only be used on self transferring wheel chair users (those whom can transferunnaided from their own chair to the evac chair)

They MUST not be used on non self transferring wheel chair users!

this evac-chair is not meant for self-evacuate or self-escapey. you still need to have a trained helper to operate the tool, such as, do the transfer and moving the loaded chair down the stairs. without helper it just dont work!

the best solution is to provide a facility that requires minimum assistance and yet allow self-escape or self-evacuate, similar to evac-lifts that operates without electricity
