Hard wired smoke detector in flat lobby & false alarms

A small lobby in a flat has a hard wired smoke detector.  Off the lobby is living room and kitchen.  Tenant has removed the battery because cooking sets of detector.  The dimwit does not want to close the door when cooking.  I feel uncomfortable changing it to a heat detector and resiting in such a small area will not make any difference. 

Can these standard detectors that they install in flat lobbies be changed to multi sensor or do they have the capacity to have their sensitivity adjusted?

If it's a standalone type smoke alarm then they can't be adjusted.

An extraction hood over the cooker may reduce stray smoke to undetectable levels, but ultimately it's a tenant management problem not a premises problem. If tenant is disabling the landlord's detector then this is criminal damage and will also probably place the property in breach of HHSRS under Housing Act 2004. Not having a working smoke detector may also invalidate the landlord's insurance.

Multi sensors wouldn't necessarily help, anyway.  Depends how they're designed & set up.  Many only use the heat element to vary the sensitivity by ~1% or so.
