Does anyone know of any courses / workshops running on how to use FDS?

Have you tried the official website. http://www.fire.nist.gov/fds/

Maybe you could try the company below with an email, I have no knowledge of them other than they were the only UK company I could find.

Name: Simon Ham, Director, Fire Safety Engineering Consultants Limited
Address:  FiSEC Lincoln Office, 33 Spring Hill, Lincoln, LN1 1HF, United Kingdom
Email:  simonham@btconnect.com
URL:  http://fisec.co.uk/
Target Area: Training in the basics of FDS/Smokeview for newcomers. Interested in forming a self-help group for more advanced users.
All my responses only apply to England and Wales and they are an overview of the subject, hopefully it will point you in the right direction and always treat with caution.

Some of my colleagues have done a correspondance course in FDS from the School of Fire Protection, Seneca Collage, Toronto, and they speak quite highly of it - one was a complete beginner.

Dave McGill was the course director.

GB, the user manual is about the best thing you will get if you are willing to stick at it and take your time.

If your company has the money I would suggest learning as much as you can on the actual code to give you a good background in how it works, then getting something like Pyrosim.
