Letter boxes in fire doors
« on: November 24, 2004, 01:55:17 AM »
I was trying to establish if anyone out there can point me in the direction of any systems that could be considered for a letter box in a FD60s fire door?

(Primaily it is for an FD60S fire door entarnce door of an apartment, in a block over 18m in height, thus requiring fire fighting shaft, hence FD60S. ADB 18.12 effectively permits this situation).

I appreciate the British Standard for Fire Door asemblies BS 8214: 1990 but seem to think that this is really dealing with FD30S fire doors especially if 14.4 letter plates is considered. (Effectively determining the position of the letter box in the neutral plane of the door).

There is a small seed in the back of my mind that letter boxes and FD60S doors don't mix, but was wondering if technology / systems have been developed for anything over the last few years?

I appreciate there are alternative ways for mail deleiveries e.g. boxes in foyer prefably out of fire fighting shaft, so the problem is not surmountable but was floating to see if there was anything new in this area. Any information would be grateful.

FD30s is all you need for an entrance door, regardless of the height. (see Table B1 item 2a in AD B)

Envirograf might be able to help with their intumescent letter plate system.
