Title: BAA Interview
Post by: swiftfire on May 24, 2008, 08:53:51 PM
Hi All,
Appologies if this topic has been up time and time again...I just cant find it on the forum! Im sure I speak for a few guys when I say that I have passed the physical stage of selection. (Congratulations to all those that have!) The next stage is the interview. Can anyone offer any hints and tips?! Nothing that will put anyone at an unfair advantage, just a few pointers? Also, is anyone able to explain the waiting list system and if you have to re-take the selection again after a certain amount of time?

Thank You!!!

You want 'white elephant' to answer this, he's more clued up on this matter than me. I'd probably just give you duff gen so I'm keeping me trap shut. What airport are you going for? and well done to all the guys that passed their physicals.

I think if your on the waiting list for 12 months you have to re-do the fitness testing, I had to, but don't know if thats still the case.

I have had an interview for la fire service before in surrey at passed it, but still quite nervous, What sort of things are the asking. Is it the questions like, "tell me a time when you have helped someone else to achieve a goal?" also have the mentioned when you have ot have medicals? is it as and when aplace comes up or before you go on the waiting list?

I have no idea whether they get priority or not.

Hi All,
Speaking of Teesside...whats it like? General daily routine etc? Do you have to drive there or can you fly to Durham Tees Valley. How is the course set out? Monday-Friday with weekends to go down the pub? Or do most go back home? Any info would be great!

Thanks
Title: BAA Interview
Post by: Yeebsy on June 19, 2008, 08:48:47 PM
How to get there depends on you. If you want to fly then the company will organise tickets. Once again if you want to stay up there at weekends then you can, but I believe you will have to find a B&B. White_Elephant will be able to shed light on this. General routine? Dunno really as I never done my basic up there but I should imagine, death by PowerPoint, fire ground, death by PowerPoint again!!! Oh and make sure you get into Yarm on Tuesday nights.
Title: BAA Interview
Post by: swiftfire on June 19, 2008, 09:24:22 PM
Oh Yarm...Ive heard too many stories about this place. Sounds "interesting" to say the least. Thanks for the info Yeebsy
Title: BAA Interview
Post by: White_elephant on June 19, 2008, 09:48:12 PM
Nope you can stay weekends and most people do, TRUST me you dont want to miss the weekends in Yarm.

Ok its Mon-Friday except for week 6 which is Mon-Thurs, Friday, you spend an hour getting your results then its all over.

Parade in the morning, kit must be spotless, ironed, shoes polished, after the 1st week you dont have to do this, but for week one you do it every morning.

Brekkie/Lunch/Dinner all laid on, and its good food, have a big brekkie, a light lunch and a big evening meal, especially on Tuesdays! Do not have the semolina, you have been warned.

Morrissons supermarket is just up the road, there is a pizza place that delivers to the bar, dont fly up, drive, it will give you loads more freedom.

If you stay the weekends, get into Newcastle for the night, get a travel lodge and enjoy! ;-)

Week one is basic firemanship, hydrants/ladders etc
Week two I cant remember!
Week three is Aircraft Construction (death by powerpoint)
Week four is BA
Week five is first aid
Week 6 is fireground week and tests/exams

At the end of every week there is a written exam, at the end of the BA week there is also an oral and practical don and start up test as well as a test on the BA board ECO etc.

The final oral exam is a test on all 6 weeks, but it is NOTHING to worry about, unless you are seriously stupid you will not fail this course.

On a serious note spend 1 hour every day going through your noted/revising, get together with the other lads/lasses and do some Q&A every night too. Do not spend the whole of the evening stressing about the exams and the final oral, get an hour's work done then get to the bar and have a beer, or get into Yarm.

Tuesday nights = YARM/BEER/LADIES do not miss out, even in week 6, its a great chance to let your hair down.
Black Bull first, then 11pm into the Cross Keys/Claggy Mat.

Listen to the instructors, work hard and revise little and often, dont cram for 5 hours on the last day, do an hour every night, trust me.

You will love it, by the end of the 1st week it will be like home!
Any questions email me

Hi white elephant, im not going to teeside yet. although im keeping everything crossed i get to. i have my fitness and final interview on monday. just out on interest though if you know. Yeebsy mentioned if u fly up, the company will organise your tickets. does that mean they just sort it out and we pay for it, or is it on the company. Also if you know, what is the wage structure now for stanstead, and how much annual leave days do you get?

Don't worry about the bleep test.I trained for the bleep test in-particular and struggled to manage to complete it 3times despite training hard. But when it actually came to doing it i sailed through it and was hardly blowing at all compared to others that where their.

I'd say you do fine in the fitness test it's not as daunting as you think
Title: BAA Interview
Post by: swiftfire on June 25, 2008, 10:03:25 PM
I agree with graham31. Dont worry about the bleep test! If thats your only concern then my advice is to get a good nights sleep, eat lightly before the physical and hydrate well! Make sure you warm up...the last thing you want is a cramp whilst half way through! The key is pace. The first 3 levels you can slow jog...and i mean slow! practice a good turning technique at the lines and try to time it so that your foot crosses the line as the beep sounds, not before. You all run together so work together in terms of pacing and encourage each other, it can make a big difference! All the best.

Can i ask a few random questions please. Do you do alot of fitness drills up at teeside, or is it mostly in the classroom? Whilst your on a night shift at stanstead or any other baa airport, what sort of things do you do? Has anyone else got through there fitness and interviews at stanstead yet?

When i did the bleep test i was the only one who done the slow jog for the first 3 or 4 levels.Everyone else ran and had to wait for the bleep.
So don't run with the crowd keep to your own pace get in a rhythm don't get caught up way the others you'll soon be running with them once the levels start to go up and that were you'll feel the benefit of starting out slow

I am 21.

I think so far only 3 have failed at Stanstead, but that's not definite, the PTI said to me that 2 women had failed, then i did as well, so just guessing. He also said that Stanstead is pretty full, and they wont be needing many people from this recruitment campaign.

How many people was there with you on the 25th that passed. I think everyone who passed goes on to the waiting list. Just depends how well you did, to sort out where you are on the list. I have thought about emailing them to try and get an idea of time scales, but im not sure they would be able to tell us to much at the moment.

FF.interview is PQA based so no qustions on firefighting or airports ect, so my advise is to practice as many PQA based  answer as possible .their are 8 sections.

Hey calif123,

im also awaiting a possible position at heathrow, after having my interview and medical over 6 weeks ago now. really dont know what to do? i spoke to roy lindsay a couple of days after my medical and he said the text book "u will be notified by email should a position become available" which is fair enough. having looked on the website of the fire school in teeside i see there is a couple more basic ff courses commencing this year....but when or if i will be contacted is a complete mystery to me. WHY IS IT ALL SO HUSH HUSH? 1 of the guys i went through the various stages with had a weeks notice before starting his course, how r people supposed to give notice at their current jobs in order to start training? ive actually spoke to a couple of people who have said they also had only a weeks notice before starting, whats with the last minute rush?? is it very last minute when places on courses are decided?? im just wondering if anyone on here has any difinative answers at all? or has ear-wigged roy speaking about anything??!!

Hey pukka

I am on the waiting list too, although i havent had a medical like yourself. I'm guessing your 1 stop closer. It's not ideal really is it but i guess there's not much we can do really.  Sit tight and keep those fingers crossed.  I wonder how many people are actually on the waiting list?? Or how many get accepted onto each training course?? All is a mystery really.  Isnt the next courses at the beginning of september and middle of october?? Hopefully there is some light at the end of the tunnel. All the best though.

yea fingers crossed i suppose.

the website says sept / oct theres a couple of courses. and the guy i spoke to going on the last course said there was 7 people on the june 1.

im just finding it hard not knowing anything, even if its not good news; at least u can move on from it instead of being in limbo for months on end, know what i mean?

all the best to you as well fella.

FF???

Annual leave is 256 hours per annum & rises after 8 years service. Starting pay for a trainee fire-fighter is £23,125 & this rises to £25,975 once on the run. To this you can add about £3500 shift pay. Overtime will substantially increase this.

I hope this helps.

Pukka, sorry to disappoint you, but I was on a waiting list for BAA for over a year.  I did get a phone call every 3 or 4 months to check I was still interested and that I wanted to stay on the list.  They keep people on the list just so recruits are available if there are any unforseen retirements/transfers/promotions etc that need filling.  I've know people on the list for a month, others for 2 years+.  Keep in touch with the station you applied for every few months, but unfortunatley you just have to be patient.  Good luck!

bambam016,

Those figures are for Gatwick. Heathrow will be more & I can't comment on Stansted as I have no knowledge of their pay scales.

Hi BAAfiery,

Would you know what is happening about the recruitment campaign that is happening at LGW are there any dates when then may be hiring new people?

I have nothing to do with recruitment but there could be a number of vacancies in the near future.

The vacancies have nothing to do with the sale. We have one command & control vehicle, one domestic tender, one light foam tender, three/four major foam tenders and one hose layer.

Im afraid not mate. Im still waiting for a call from Stanstead. I spoke to the man incharge at the start of december, and he said h is hoping for some places to come up in the next few months at stanstead. so im keeping my fingers crossed anytime soon for us. Although i dont know how many people are on the waiting list, or at what position im at as they dont tell you. I guess your in the same boat, and its just another waiting game. really do hope it comes soon though, as i got laid off just before christmas.

Hi harwichfire.
It`s nice to hear there may be positions coming up and I Hope you get the the call soon. I`m in the same position as you playing the waiting game. Could I ask if you keep in touch with stansted often? As I havn`t spoke to anyone since the interview and may give them a call.

i tend to just send an email across about every 6 weeks. Just asking if there is any further news. I normaly get the same answer, which is ( No news at the moment) but atleast i know we havent all just been forgoten. It really is just a waiting ame, but its so frustrating, when its a job that you want to do sooo much.

I'm afraid that it's just a waiting game. Unlike a County Brigade where you can be posted anywhere, you have applied to join a particular station & I'm sure you can appreciate vacancies do not occur on a regular basis.

I know this is a long shot, but dos anybody know if us people who passed all the sections and final interviews for stanstead airport just over 2 years ago are still on a waiting list. I was told at the time there was no time cale to the waiting list and would stay on it aslong as it takes. the last i heard when i phoned up BAA headquaters was that the list was still active, but due to no places at the mo, had been archieved. this was a good 6 months ago. Does anybody know if this is still the case for fact, or if they know of any jbs/places becoming avaliable anytime soon. Im working else where now (not as a firefighter) but still very keen on this. and maybe abit foolishly but keep my fingers crossed, as no other services seem to be doing recuiting for fire at the moment.

Ada

Hey

Is there anything else I should expect ?

Thanks

Hey Buddy

I am also attending Heathrow tommorrow (19th). I THINK it is just the initial selection tests i.e, as you say Maths, english etc.

They do usually send you an email every few weeks to let you know in advance what you will be doing on certain dates that you attend if you pass each stage of the process.

This day is scheduled to take between 3-4 and a half hours and I cant see the tests taking that length of time!, so maybe they will add something else for us all to do???.. It's all pretty basic stuff mate, the tests are not designed to catch you out or make you look like you have a slack standard of education. Just that you have a basic understanding.

All the stages usually take around 3-4 months to complete. Initial tests, Interview, group assessment, role paly etc, interview and medical.

May catch you at Heathrow tommorrow, If not then the very best of luck to you.

Regards. Tazzy2040.

With a little fear of being shot down on this i'll tell you what i believe to be true.

ALL brigades have worked on the following principal when recruiting.

they have x vacancies to advertise. from this they send out x application forms.

If, from these applicants they get none that acheive 'the standard' then no one gets a job, so they re-advertise

Now lets say 30 acheive the required standard, but they only have 20 posts. historically they give the first 20 a job and then tell the other 10 to wait till theres a vacancy.

If your one of those 10, trust me you will get a call. no brigade will re-recruit with the associated cost when they have a list of proven candidates.

i have known people to wait for their call for 4 years.
