According to radio 2 the fire extinguisher was invented this day in 1863.

Actually it was Captain George William Manby in 1813 who invented the first portable pressure operated extinguisher, an air pressurised copper cylinder containing 3 gallons of pearl ash (potassium carbonate) solution.

1866 saw the patenting of the first Soda Acid (tartaric, not sulphuric) extinguisher by a Frenchman, don't know about 1863!

Wow - you need to get out more. I only quoted Chris Evans on Radio 2 because I was stuck in traffic. I now feel I have to apologise for my lack of knowledge.
