Modification to an existing fire alarm system.

I was asked the following question can anybody help. These problems never raised their head when I was treading the boards.

Regarding a modification to an existing fire alarm system in a commercial application, i.e. an office environment, what certification is required to be submitted on completion, and how do you differentiate between modifications and installations, and which corresponding certification is required?

Although I've not got time to read up, I think I remember correctly that it is acceptable to take a sensible view and conclude that only new parts need to be the the new British Standard and that it's OK to have older parts that complied with the version of the BS that was valid at the time of installation.

Modifications certificates are required when any new work is done to an existing system.
Installation certificates are for new installs.

Agree with Graham.

But in addition, for a new install you may also ask to see design and installation certificates.... not that you will always see them !

The modification cert basically says that the mods haven't affected the existing system in an adverse manner.

I think any alteration to a building affects in some how the fire alarm system level of protection, whether upgrade or disconnection of part of it, it needs a certification for that particular change, and it should be saved with the previous installation certification within the fire log book also record any change that has taken place in the main fire log book.

it's a good point of view but so is world peace ;)

from what i see up here, good will to all seems more likely.

And talking of good will to all, I presume you will be cheering England on in their world cup campaign ??  :)
