HUGA fire doors
« on: September 23, 2010, 08:10:15 PM »
Evening All,

Has anyone come across HUGA fire doors? I did today in a new build hotel; the plate on the door states HUGA BS 1 as per BS476-22 30 min fire rated. However there were no intumescent strips on the bedroom doors or frames, can't be right can it?
If anyone knows any different can you enlighten me please.
Thanks

German company that does both domestic & commercial doors, for standard and specialist applications.

Perhaps the intumescent is behind lipping or it should be in the door frame as oppose to the door?

Might be worth emailing them if concerned - their site isn't much help other than confirming they do both fire doors and smoke stop doors.

Thanks for the link Anthony, Not a lot of technical advice though.
I checked the frames but no intumescents fitted.

As far as I am aware you do not have to have intumescent seal is both the door and frame one is sufficient.
All my responses only apply to England and Wales and they are an overview of the subject, hopefully it will point you in the right direction and always treat with caution.

That's the concern I have, there is no visible seal or strips in the bedroom frames on on the doors. The ID Plate states as follows: HUGA BS 1 as per BS476-22 /
30 min fire rated. The same type of doors are being installed in the corridors with vision panels and cold smoke seals fitted.

Are they rebated? Perhaps someone is fitting them the old fashioned way!

If seals are behind lipping you won't necessarily see them, but you would need proof from the  manufacturer rather than assuming

if only they were! I guess the only way forward is to contact the HUGA technical people for conformation still seems that something is amiss though

As AB has said the intumescent seals may not be visible and the doors in the corridors are smoke stop doors to subdivide the corridor. You need to get proof from the manufacturer.

I would start with the installation company; they should have more than just a label to go on. My suspicion is they are not being installed correctly, are they being installed as a door set or are they using their own frames?  You need to get the test evidence and see what was actually tested and if it doesn’t match the installation in the hotel, it won’t work.

There is no such thing as a 30 min fire door!

If you are looking to see if there are strips under the lipping then, first look at the top of the door as you can sometimes see the end of the strip. Next pop out a lock or other fitting that is cut into the door and you should be able to see it.

Thanks for the advice Bobbins /wee brian - I shall get the steps out and investigate the tops of the doors. I am awaiting conformation from the architects regarding this matter but nothing so far.

Hi ASIF

If you were a girlie like me, I'd suggest you carried a handbag mirror, but as I guess you're a macho man, can I suggest you put a dental mirror into your travelling door inspection kit?   Local markets sell quite nice cheap ones on extendable arms and it spares you staggering onto sites weighed down with steps as well as everything else you need to carry.   Some of the mirrors (I think they're really intended for use by DIY car repairers) also have a magnet on the end, so you can check out whether things like hinges are steel or not.

The BWF 'gap tester' card for fire doors also has a mirrored section to check the top of the door for seals and BWF certification labels.
