Not necessarily. With ABS and traction control and engine monitoring and alarm systems being live all the time; a high resistance fault can occur anywhere, possibly caused by water intrusion.

I agree the fire appears to have spread rear to front and not affected the engine compartment.

Theres any number of potential causes of fire within the passenger compartment and outside it, especially if DIY audio systems etc have been installed.

I think Colin Todd may have some statistics on this in relation to volkswagen cars.

Towbar wiring is another potential problem area with a permanent live feed supplied by 25 amp fuses.
