Title: Illuminated BS 5499 fire safety signage
Post by: afterburner on January 11, 2008, 07:19:26 AM
Does anyone know of a supplier for illuminated signage conforming to BS 5499? Every online catalogue I look at seems only to supply the 'Euro-sign' version.

thanks in anticpation for any suggestions

The debate continues, the so called "Euro" sign is that detailed in legislation in the Signs and Signals Regulations 1996.  Those in BS 5499 are recommendations only, thus you may only find the legal signs.

Thanks Jokar, I'm caught in one of those situations where the Regs say one thing and the Guidance documents produced by the Scottish Government for compliance with fire safety legislation states a clear preference for the BS signs. Problem exacerbated by Enforcing Authority being HM Fire Inspectorate who have a natural inclaination to steer towards the published guidance!

afterburner,
by illuminated signage are you referring to back lit signage on emergency lighting for example or photo-luminescent signage?

Les, the backlit or self illuminated vertically displayed sign. The full range of both types seems easily available in the photo luminscent series.

Get plain flat faced luminares or exit boxes & separate BS5499 adhesive fascias. I've supplied and fitted these in a few premises and the adhesive overlays are ex-stock, reasonably priced and available in various designs (i.e. 'exit', fire exit' or the symbol & man on their own).

Almost all EL suppliers do EC exit boxes only, but if you want BS5499 symbols its still easy - drop me a line & I'll give you more detail information

Just to keep banging the drum I was dissapointed to find that the NECIEC guidance document - the bible to all its members- just reproduces the old ICEL guidance documents warts and all.
