Operation of Ov's
« on: November 04, 2009, 04:15:59 PM »

In the 2006 edition of ADB, section 2.26 states that where manual activation OV's are used, the control system should be designed to ensure that the vent at the head of the stair opens before or at the same time as the vent on the fire floor. Other guidance, like the parts in BS 5588 pt 5/9999 or pt1, where vents and windows provided in common areas for Fire service use, can be openable with lever handles, spindles etc. Is this type of operation not allowed under ADB as a vent (window?) could be open for normal ventialtion and therefore be open before the stair vent, or am I missing something?

The stuff in ADB works differently. That's why the interlock between the OVs and the top vent is required.

You can use lever handles for the OVs if you fit an electronic interlock to the vent that then releases the top vent. I think that's how most people do it now.
