I can only find one reference in the regs to these things and it isn't exactly clear.
The job has 3 "CCTV" cameras with this heat sensing technolgy etc (you may guess I've only read about it before !) that overlook a very large indoor waste silo.
The cameras and supplies are all fault monitored etc and I'm told, are fully compliant with regs, and are connected to the FA to produce different levels of alarm at varying temperatures.
The installer says this is all compliant for a P1 system, however, I was always under the impression these cameras are "supplemental" and the primary fire detection should be provided by AFD (point or beams) at ceiling level - which is about 30m up.
Are cameras on their own acceptable as a means of detection ?

The 2002 version of BS 5839 Part 1 makes some brief references to video smoke detection (including the need for it to be able to work in the absence of normal lighting an in a power failure) but I think the technology was/is in the early stages of development when the BS was written.
So, my opnion is, that a system including video smoke detection could comply, but I personaly would need to be convinced of the system's ability to detect fire - including a deap seated fire.
If the video smoke detection is up to the job, I see no need for point detector back-up.

Slight point of fact - these are Heat Sensing Technology cameras and not video smokies.I've never even heard of them but then I just found out that Wilma didn't marry Barney!

Didn't she... I always did like her.
But true, these are "thermal cameras" so I would assume not dependant on light levels.
So teh big question is, would you rely on these to give you a warning of fire from a Life Safety and Property Protection point of view... ?

Personaly speaking, I would be expecting the installer/manufacturer to convince me with some solid evidence.

You have just ruined the Flintstones for me Buzz.

Ok assuming they demo the kit and it works and everyone is happy, as these things are hardly mentioned in the BS (remember these are thermal) should they noted as a variation ??
-
i would write a small discalimer, stating that as they(cameras) are not fully covered in the latest c.o.p,then you cannot guarntee that the system is fully compliant to the relevant category.

Thanks for that...... I thought Wilma was Fred's wife ????
Betty was with Barney.....!

Hey! Does that mean they had a child out of WedRock? :D

We used these thermal image cameras sucessfully a number of years ago to protect coal conveyors for a CEGB power station. You can get burning coal transfered from the stack into the station silos where it causes a bit of a panic. They actually work really well, but you have to calibrate them to the job in hand.
About ten thousand bottles of red wine ago we could have probably remembered how to do it but we think it involves a calibration kit provided from the manufacturers in order to set your alarm levels. They work much better than the old 'Infrascope' if any of you can remember that far back.

I can't find the words to express my disbelief you came out without that.... you're not Jonathon Ross are you ?? ;)
Thanks bearded one, we aren't doing the install, just need a handle on what they comply to etc.

I don't think they comply with any BS or En fire standards. I could be wrong, as my wife informs me daily. I would regard them as suplimentary and stick that on the ticket. Here's a coincidence. A guy with your name used to work for me in Birmingham as a fire engineer but he went down under to Auz. Small world

Yep my view too.
Blimey two DR's.... I'll have words with me mother.....!
Thanks

one is enough :D
