Title: National Occupational standards - requirement to drive.

Hi
If someonehas never had a driving license, once we move from rank to role I have been told they will not get competent pay, as driving is in their rolemap.

Is this correct.

No, it does not affect someone who is not a driver.

Unit 9 covers driving, so if you are not a driver you cannot be expected to maintain your standards against Unit 9. Once you become a driver you wil be expected to maintain your standards.

rips - your answer was nearly there you just needed to be aware of the grey book link!

There is one specific example identified with the Sixth Edition of the Scheme of Conditions of Service Section 3 paragraph 7 where a F&RS may not require an employee to carry out a particular activity or in this case a full unit of their role map, yet the employee is still deemed to be competent and therefore attract the competent rate of pay applicable to the role.

quote -     ' As with all other units in a role map, a fire and rescue authority can require an employee to carry out driving duties. Where the fire and rescue authority does not require an employee to drive or, for genuine reasons, the employee is unable to drive he or she shall be regarded as competent in the role subject to having demonstrated competence in all other applicable functions in the role map.'


it may be that some fire authorities dont require 'other' parts of specific rolemaps (NOS's) to be undertaken, where the employer makes that decision the employee would not be deemed 'not competent'

Thanks Dave its just I retired before IPDS and although I have a basic understanding its still a mystery to me. I need the info to keep my website up to date.
As a point of information in my brigade to get qualified fireman pay you had to be a driver or a qualified ET operator.
