Who specced the alarm and why was the afd required for life safety or property protection?
Take a look at the inspection and commissioning certificate. If its a properly installed system it will identify the spec and system type.
If a life safety system it may have been a requirement to cover a specific building design issue in which case an L4 specification will be quoted with details of what has been provided.
But more likely it should be an L3/L2 system and if so as you say the first consideration for detection should be escape routes and rooms off.
It may be a property protection system to ensure that the fire brigade are called if a fire breaks out whilst the cinema is shut.

As Kurnal mentioned-ask the installing company what Catgeory of system they have installed.

Isn't a specific task like that an L5 system?
L4 = Escape routes only?
