Title: Halogen lights - proximity to electrical cable

Hi
I am installing some 50w mains halogen ceiling recess downlights. I have plenty of clearance in the ceiling space (about 7 inches) so I dont think this is a concern. However their is a trunk of several electrical cables which is 'suspended' through the joists.

My question is - How much distance do I need to ensure between the topside of the halogen lights and any electrical cables?

The general opinion on other posts I have read seems to be that halogen lights can be dangerous if incorrectly installed so I am keen to ensure they are safely fitted.

Best to check with the manufacturer of the light fitting. Itreally ought to be in the instructions.

Please also remember that in drilling holes in the plasterboard you may be breaching  a fire resisting ceiling. If it is - eg if it is a house in multiple occupation, flat, care home, office or shop with flats above, hotel etc  then you may need to seek advice on how the fire resistance of the ceiling may be maintained.
In such cases its best to leave the ceiling intact,, although you can buy glassfibre hoods that fit over the fitting inside the ceiling void.

Many of these bulbs run very hot- remember windsor castle- so wee bs advice to consult the manufacterer or supplier is spot on. Best of luck with that one though!

I can quote an example from personal experience. I recently built a timber framed house for my family. In the early stage of construction the electrician put up a string of 100w bulbs for the tradesmen, one of the bulbs was resting against a door lining. The smoke was smelt by a guy upstairs who came down just in time to see a small flame flicker up the door lining! Luckily he dealt with it and save the house. When you consider that a halogen bulb burns hotter than a conventional bulb............

It is a domestic 2 floor detached house. I would have expected more guidance with the packaging but unfortunately not and the tehchical 'help' line was pretty useless.

I have pretty much decided to re-route the cables moving them 4-5 inches horizontally away from the lights. I will probably also fit the fire hoods.
