Title: Spy Glass Holes?
Post by: Keith Tarbuck on December 18, 2006, 03:00:57 PM
During a FRA we noticed a large number of "Spy Glasses" missing from the main flat door (student accommodation) not halls of Residence, but private sector.

The building is just over a year old (Sept 2005).

My question is: does anybody know if and to what degree the integrity of a Fire Rated door would be affected by these spy glasses missing.

The hole is 12mm in diameter when the glass is missing.

We are in the process of fitting new ones and trying to secure them.

Fire rating will be affected but who knows how much- that depends on the fire. But why not fill the holes temporarily with a squirt of intumescent mastic - easily removed when you source the new spyglasses

I would suspect minimal risk in most locations. What are they doing with the things?
