Hi guys
As part of the review of Part B of the Building Regulations ODPM has recently appointed BRE to carry out an advanced consultation exercise. This is in advance of a conventional formal consultation which will be published by ODPM at a later date.
You may wish to complete the online questionnaire at www.bre.co.uk/frs/adb.
Colin (not Todd) has set up another forum for you to discuss the review, its locked at the moment but I'll ask him to turn it on.

Brian, This link is not working. Is it correct, or just not yet active?
-
Naughty little full stop at the end. try

Ok I didnt expect thousands of responses but maybe a couple would be nice.
Is it that there is a problem with the web form or is nobody that interested?
-
Patience Brian, once on that  site there is a lot to consider. so it may take a while for people to reply. Do you have any comments related to the RRO (Regulation Reform Order)?
-
The RRO isnt really my bag. Obviousely we need to be aware of what is being done with the RRO as the one affects the other.
We are also working up a revision of the Procedural Guide to take account of the changes that the RRO brings about. This is all pretty much on hold until the Order gets through its scrutiny stage. I understand this procces is about to start but I have no idea how long it will take.
My own personal view is that the RRO is a good idea. But a change as fundamental as this is bound to rattle a few cages and it can't be perfect.

Brian
there is so much to consider with Building Rega at the moment apart from the review, important as it is.
I'm glad to here that there is to be a review of the Procedural Guidance.
There also needs to be a review of the way Approved Inspectors carry out their functions. They really are out of control now and not only that, but because there is commercial pressure on Local Authorities as a result of this so called competition in this area they (some LA's) are now accepting what would normally be regarded as not complying with Building Regs.
ODPM, both Building Regs Division and the Fire Division. must recognise the problems that the introduction of AI's has caused and address it.
The only independent body left is the Fire Service (apart from London that is) who have to sort out the mess on occupation of the building.
How long will it be before we see the results of substandard building regulations approvals show up in in some way?
-
I'm not sure that's my bag either! But I understand where you are coming from. The web form included some space for general commets, why not use it to make this point.
All the comments, unless they are very rude, will be collated into a report for ODPM and the BRAC working group to consider.
-
Brian,
I will be making the point on the web site and I can assure that the comments will not be rude or otherwise defamatory. They may be inflamatory though!
I just feel that a lot of people out there are trying to do a good job for both the construction industry and the safety of the users of our building stock.
However this cause is not championed by corporate away days with a golf club in your hands in the morning and a free bar for the rest of it.
Sorry I have to remain anonymous on this one though as these are my views and not necessarily those of my employer etc......
-
Golf and a free bar, I can't imagine who you are talking about (actually I can think of a few).
You raise a good point about anonimity.
The web questionaire does ask for name and e-mail adress. This is only so we can keep you informed when the consultation paper is published etc. The form also askes for the "Organisation" this is currently a compulsory field on the form but I am getting that changed this week. In the meentime just put "none" in the box.
The final report we provide to ODPM will not have the names of Indivual contributors just a summary of the responses received.
-
Brian, thanks for the reply. We have met by the way, at the recent seminar in the Millennium stadium for passive fire protection.
Perhaps I will fill out the web site questionnaire twice. Once from home where I state my own views and from the office where I can state the views of myself and my employer.
I have also managed to get a couple of places on the workshops too which was no mean task!
-
Just a simple questions about the questionnaire!
How long will it be available for?
I am trying to make everyone in the ironmongery world aware of it but obviously if we can say - "get your answers in by....date" then this will help.
Please be assured that there is loads of interest in this subject and everyone is determined that the problems that have occured trying implement the new AD"M" MUST not be repeated with AD"B".
QED the BRE questionnaire is a valuable resource in the process of consultation and concensus creation.
-
Good question.
It would have helped if we put a closing date on the website! (must try harder)
Its around the middle of June. (I'll get back to you with a more accurate date) If you can try and get responses in by the end of May it will help.
Remember this is onlay a PRE-consultation. Once proposals are put together there will be a more formal (3 month) consultation.
