I would like to gain some sort of official qualifications in the field of fire engineering, but alas can not afford the time to attend college.

 Does any one know if there are any officially recognised courses you can do from home in your own time??

Try The ICS as they may be able to do something. I did my MIFireE back in the early 80's via ICS.
