Would there be any interest in a firenet get together day and night? We could invite a couple of guest speakers and make it a CPD event and a pint or three afterwards. Maybe could even run to a hot Toddy (if he would come)
Say at Moreton?
Guest speaker suggestions- oxyreduct?, water mist? Care Standards? HMO? Fire engineering update? fire resisting curtains?
What do you think?
-
If that's an open invitation to the Forum members then count me in (no Shiraz here, just a pint I'm afraid!)
-
What a great idea Kurnal, (were you getting a little sentimental with the shiraz since its xmas, whilst no doubt listening to a fairytail of new york, when you had this great idea)Will there be a prize for who has furthest to travel? It would really depend on when for me, but I would be very interested.
-
I do believe this would be both useful and a great way of getting to know the people behind the names. I would certainly enjoy a meeting too.
-
Are IFE/FPA/Morton running anything next year we could block book onto which would cover one or more of kurnal's excellent suggestions? I could travel to Morton for the day, and would be hopeful of getting down.
-
I'm up for it.....
-
Cracking idea
-
Silly idea............count me in!
-
Good idea, I would be interested. I've not been to Moreton for at least, oohhh 6 weeks!
-
Would the bar be open?????
-
What about Bugs? I can't quite remember where it was but i'm sure I enjoyed myself ...
-
Keep me posted up for it!!
-
The 'Bugs' as we all knew it is long dead and buried. All we've got left is a disco at the British legion Club with a ratio of male:female of about 100:1. It open around 10:00pm and cost a few quid to get.
OOPs - not that i've ever been there of course! Just listening to others
-
this is a great idea Kurnal. Suggesting guest speakers from distilleries, breweries etc. with samples etc.
-
Good idea about the " get-to-gether"...Keep me informed.

Sounds fun...

Yes !
Where's Morton ???!!!
-
near Birmingham i think

Gloucestershire
-
Just down the road from the Ugly Bugs.

Has this thread died a death? I think its a great idea, I would welcome a meet of the forum at a venue convenient for most
-
No its not died a death there is a fair amount of interest, the next step is if all those who may be interested can email me with any details of what you would like- geographical location for the event, whether overnight stay may be needed, whther you would prefer it to be a booze and social get together or if we should try and make it a CPD type event with the booze later?
Then I could approach forum management via Chris and others to seek endorsement and sponsorship when we have a clear picture of what people want and numbers involved.
-
Kurnal, you have mail
-
Kurnal, you have more mail
-
Kurnal just wondered are we any further forward with this idea? It does sound an incredibly daft idea but thats why its so great! ;-)
-
Not yet any further forward. We have 6 confirmed expressions of interest- thanks to those of you who have responded. I have cancelled the telephone kiosk I initially booked for the event but havnt yet booked the bus shelter. I guess we would need to attract about 20- 30 to make it really viable.
Any more takers- especially those still serving in Brigades?
-
Re-affirming intetrest here from Manchester
-
More mail Kurnal ....
-
Kurnal,
Book the bus shelter.
I'm up for it, daytime or evening. Ahhh the joys of being my own boss
-
can I come??...I promise not to be controversial!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We have 8-10 members who seem anxious to get togther if only to re-inforce the North South divide and bury hatchets in each other whilst using the primitive toilet facilities on the windy plains of Gloucestershire and dribbling ice cream over each other. Hey and Jokar can demonstrate his setting the water cooler on fire trick. So as it appears it will be a small event lets talk dates and venues.
I would suggest June or September in a hotel with an all day bar, a small conference room facility, kick off at lunchtime with a buffet style lunch, a couple of guest speakers (ideas or offers welcome ?) then a decent meal and pint or two in the evening followed by an overnight stay to sleep it off.
Anyone care to build on this?
-
I can build on that. You obviously were never put in charge of organising stag nights were you?

Has anyone considered whether or not past members would be intrested in coming. Members who some of you may still be in contact with but don't tend to post much here these days.
Colin Todd springs to mind, maybe people like Marty Brandrick as well who I noticed got a fleeting mention on these forums earlier today? Retired consultants / fire officers etc
-
Clevelandfire I think you have slipped up there- instead of an itinery or a good day out you appear to have posted the work routines for a certain North East fire Brigade.
But it'l do for starters. Do you have anyone in mind for the role of comedian, chorus girls and drunken fire officer?
-
Comedian - Peter Kaye - should be pretty cheap to hire
Chorus Girls - The Roly Pollys

Sounds good to me Kurnal and as much as I like Cleavelands suggestions, if we do use have a couple of speakers some members could use this as part of their CPD.
Then we can put our flares, platform shoes and anoraks on and go disco dancing.

Well you can PhilB, i think the rest of us like to go out dressed as normal human beings. You tend not to get pointed at so much that way.

Doing his 'Keith Lard' Fire Safety Officer character of course....... :)

Count me in, Mrs Retty said I'd be allowed out.
Please try and convince Mr Barry that Flares aren't the way forward would you though Uncle Kurn
-
The main reason PhilB wears platforms is to keep his bits dry on the golf course. They are pretty high though to keep him out of puddles harm! And the flares? Well just in case he needs the life boat...

Could you define what you mean by "his bits" Mr P?

Not on this 'public' forum! But suffice to say whilst walking between shots, on a course in Kent, he disappeared in a puddle. The olde nursery rhyme 'Doctor Foster went to Gloucester' must have been written for Phil... but Phil has stayed put in the 'shire.

Apologies chaps but I've only just seen this posting, I must therefore clarify a few things.
Firstly, it was not a puddle...it was a ditch a very deep smelly ditch!!
Come on now we've all done it haven't we??? thought an algae covered ditch was a green gravel path...no???...oh well just me then....but it was getting very dark!
Second point it was nothing like Dr Foster as he only disappeared up to his middle...I dissappeared completely and was only saved by some quick thinking MOD Fire Officers who managed to drag me and my flares out despite being doubled up with laughter, I don't really see what was so funny.
Now let that be the end of the matter and I propose that we don't play any such dangerous sports at our get together.
-
Thats settled then
The "Phil Barry Green Gravel Golf Masters Cup" it is
Ive phoned a few Defence F&RS lads I know and they're happy to provide "safety marshalling" for the tournament and Noel Edmounds has agreed to donate the flares for each competitor from his extensive collection.
First prize is awarded to the player with the cleanest flares
The loser, that is to say the player with the most water in his undergarments has to buy everyone a round of drinks. I'd start saving now PhilB.

From Incident Commander Bloggs, Make pumps 4... man approximately 60 years of age....slightly rotund...looks like Tony Stamp... stuck in ditch... casualty's condition worsening due to hideous flares....crews in hysterical laughter mode.... please arrange attendance of fashion police....and golf coach.

Approximately 60!!! how very dare you! Chris this must surely qualify as an abusive post, can we not punish Retty in some way?
A day spraying into the wind with Cleveland fire would give him something to think about, or perhaps send him for a walk near a pine forest on a dry summers day with some boy scouts and kindling!

Wonderful idea!
The scouts would light a fire and Cleveland would put it out
Infact I do believe he could be the World's first portable human water mist system.

Ah yes....that was many moons ago ...before PC Stamp started to impersonate me. I have been known to frequent the odd hostelry in Cheam whilst living there and working in Wandsworth, near to Youngs brewery spookily enough. Now that's a beer that would test the northern shandy drinkers from Cleveland!

I could drink you under the table at the 19th hole anyday matey boy.
You southerners can be very cocky, all mouth and no trousers in my experience. Everyone knows Northerners are a tougher breed. So wind your neck in and admit defeat before this gets very messy.
-
Hey, PhilB is in Gloucestershire and that is North of the river and makes him a Northerner.
-

No Jokar I'm afraid not. I must admit that when I lived and worked in our wonderful capital city I too thought that anything north of Watford was classed as The North. I am now much older and wiser.
Northern folk are those that reside in the vast region north of Stow on the Wold. They are a strange folk with a wierd dialect.
I think this get togeher should definately be held in Gloucestershire, probably in the Welly Pub, the beer is good and they are used to dealing with diverse customers from around the UK.
There is a large carpark that would be ideal for spraying your Newky Brown into the wind. They often have guest beers and we could arrange for London Pride to be on and some shandy for Cleveland of course...and Irun Bru if Dennis is coming. What does uncle Kurnal drink?? I'll get some Malibu in for Retty and Civvy.
-
I'll get some Malibu in for Retty and Civvy.
Malibu may suit gentle folk who play golf (especially the rotund variety who like rolling around large muddy puddles / ditches with young verile firemen and then make on it is all innocent !)
Guiness is my preferred poison. A pint of Bishops Finger (You can get cream for that) or stout ale always goes down very nicely too.
But being a Midlander I suppose I should stay loyal to Banks's ! The Scottish and Clevendlanders amongst us will be able to handle it but Cockney Cotswoldians may find even the vapours far too strong and intoxicating.
-
I'll get some Malibu in for Retty and Civvy.
Thanks?
Being somewhat of a northerner I would rather drink some nice bitter. But since Moreton is 'down south' the malibu actually sounds better than your southern excuse for beer.
Although the Boddintons from the London Bar serves its purpose.
-
Gentleman,
Lets call time on this.
Most beer is nats compared to 20-30 years ago. PhilB, Newcy is a good example.
However, as a Yorkie boy (with Welsh roots) I have to concede that in most places in GB you can get a decent pint if you suss out where to go. Fullers 1689 for instance (Chiswick Brewery) is a very nice 6.9% bottle, ESB on draft slips down a treat too..
Retty has a point about Bishops Finger too.
As far as the Prof is concerned, I have only seen him drink Coke with his lunch, but he was working at the time. I have to concede he can scoff for England but most of you FS lads are probably just as bad.

The end of September would be a smashing time to arrange this, and Moreton would be a splendid venue.
And this has nothing to do with me being on a Moreton course at the end of September!
-
Not that I'm admitting to being a beer bore (or should that be boar?), but I have been in the Inn on the Marsh, I think it's called, and they have always had an excellent range of real ales (usually in CAMRA's Good Beer Guide). It's down the far end of Moreton-in-Marsh village. I think it may have a reputation as a bit of a locals pub but I've never had any problems.
The last time I was on a course at the College, one of the lads wrote an itinary so we could have a pint in every pub/bar in the village on the same night. He actually stayed over on the Friday afternoon to make sure he got his timings right (had to drive back to Sussex afterwards!) We managed to do it, although the 30 minutes allocated to each pub was a serious underestimation! We also managed to fit in a bag of chips. Didn't do to well at the exam the following day though.

Yes but who goes to Moreton to learn?? ;-)

Yes but who goes to Moreton to learn?? ;-)
Bloomin good question
Im there all next week and looking forward to "Grab a Granny" night
-
Yes but who goes to Moreton to learn?? ;-)
Now just a minute, I never once mentioned that I'd attempted to learn anything, Bahh!
Joking aside, and I know it's very sad but I love the place. I become institutionalised very quickly, so by the afternoon of the second day I'm into the groove. Living on my own as I do, when I go to the college I have someone to cook all my meals and do all the cleaning up, tidy my room and make my bed. I get instant membership to a new social circle, free gym membership, travelling expenses, subsistance and they pay me to do it.
I think the learning bit (which I enjoy anyway really) is a small price to pay. And you may say 'well I have all of that now' and I'd ask 'yes but at what cost?'
Roll on my next course in January (might try to get to the research event in November though) and my award for the saddest person on the forum.
Bring it on then chaps(esses) :P

I'll get them in then. London Bar 1930?

1930 starts are a bit much when you are there for 2 weeks. I don't want to end up 'rotund'. :) I suppose I could make an exception for one night though.

I may have counted wrong, but I think there are 35 names so far for Kurnals great idea, what does it take Kurnal to progress this great idea of yours? would not the autumn be a good time for this event. Just thought I'd bring it back to the fore again.
-
I may be up for this - where and when? Is it up north or down south?
-
Theres a couple of things we would need before pushing this any further. The first is firm confirmation of support- last time I asked for emails from persons with a firm interest I received only five- Ricardo, Redone, Devon, Ashley and Ally.
We would also need a little sponsorship- to pay for a venue. My company would put up a hundred or two but we would need more than this- I also emailed Chris to seek Colins (the site owner) view on making it an official firenet do but received no reply.
So thats where we are. I think we need at least 30 persons interested to make it worthwhile, we need a program and venue with the right mix of social, fun and debate, and we need some cash to get things moving. From there we would seek some speakers - we perhaps dont need to look much further than our members, (though I did have an offer from Colt), and set up a sub committee to sort out the finer details.
-
what a about a sub sub committee to organise the refreshment and relaxational requirements of the assembled guests?
