hi all ive got my medical in 3 weeks time and ill be doing the chester step test (sounds like a new dance craze)
anyway ive read the other posts on this subject and ive got the test coming on cd. I was wondering if anyone new the best training to prepare for this test in the short time ive got im pretty fit already but dont want to take any chances. i gather i want to be practicing the test, and running steps alot but does anyone know what heart rate zone i should be aiming for when i train on my bike or run to improve my figures in this test. thanks for reading this and any advice is greatfully received

You want to work at about 80% of your maximum perceived heart rate which is calculated by subtracting your age from 220 (to give your Max HR) then taking 80% of that.
Good Luck!

hi thanks for that andy, also do you know if they always send for your gps records as i had mild asthma as a child and a bit in my teens and hoping this wont prove a problem as ive grown out of it and had no treatment for years now

Hi
The Brigade GP will not contact your own GP. With regards to the chester step test I had a long time off from the Fire Service and re-entered once more. I was basically unfit and never even knew I was going to do a Chester Step test that day. I passed it with flying colours. One tip I would give is to breathe deeply and take in loads air. Dont put on a show and and breathe normally just to make yourself look like your really fit.
