Title: Retained redundancies
Post by: kev14 on February 13, 2008, 08:24:41 PM
Hi i am just wondering if anyone could shed any light on how redundacies would be carried out on a retained station.
There are rumours of the station i am on going down to 1 pump and i wondered how it would be done, time served, availability, anyone any ideas i am in scotland if it makes a difference, cheers Kev

They would, I assume, first ask for voluntary redundancies.

I would think the service would offer the rest transfers to other stations, (of course involving moving house and/or full time work work if you have it) I know of (read on tinternet) a story in which the following was stated:

"The cost of removal allowances will vary in each individual case, but typically may be £2,000 for moving from rented to rented accommodation, or £5,000 for the sale and purchase of a property.

The savings in not having to train a new retained firefighter would be in the region of £3,000, with savings of £2,500 per month for each wholetime firefighter not required for nucleus crewing. The transfer of a retained firefighter, as an alternative to redundancy, would also result in saving payments on termination."

Not sure if this will be the answer your brigade come up with, but you can hope.

EDIT: Or the one last option which is always likely, keep the 1 pump station with the current compliment of staff and wait for people to get bored of never riding the shiny red thing and leave/want a move.

My brigade is reducing some two pump retained stations to one pump, but I have read that there will be no compulsory redundancies for three years natural wastage only I believe.

I think that some of these stations were struggling to maintain crewing for the second pump anyway.

I have a feeling it may just be scaremongering anyway but it would be interesting to know how they would go about it if it did happen. I wondered if they would be governed by the councils rules and regulations as these seem to govern how they carry out any discipline issues, just have to wait and see i guess,
