Is it worth buying the new draft BS9999 (replacing the BS5588 series) or should I wait till later in the year when it is a full BS 9999?

No cos its just a draft.

It shouldn't be on sale anyway

It's on sale now as a "Draft for Public Comment", having first been issued in 1996 (!) as a 'DD' (Draft for Development). Its availability is mentioned in the current "Fire Risk Management" - the retitled IFE/FPA combined Journal. Cost is £66 +£5.95 postage from BSI at Chiswick for non-BSI members. I do not know what the cost will be when it is a full BS. Hopefully the changes now onwards will be minor once comments are received.

I've ordered my copy and will peruse it with interest, having been involved in the 1990s work in various degrees prior to the DD publication.

Hi John
Please let us know if its worth buying- any significant changes to the DD. Remember the  halycon days when you did not have to pay for consultation drafts?  Hope its not a sign of the future. Expect you have to pay to submit a comment as well. World is slowly but surely going totally insane with not for profit organisations being toally focussed on one side of their balance sheets.

The document (DPC: 08/301584435) arrived this morning. Every page has a large "Draft" stamp across it, overprinting much of the text and making it unreadable! An appropriate phone call has been made to BSI.

There was apparently (reading between the 'Draft' lettering) a revised DD issued in 2005 which I don't have. So it may be that some of the comments I eventually make may not make sense as they will refer to the older DD.

Just logged on to thank you guys and warn you of the DRAFT problem written in very large thick type across each page - but obviously I am too late. Issue a draft for comment that cannot be read!! I too have complained to BSI and await their response.

Oh dear! Replacement copy turns up this afternoon from BSI - and you've guessed right - it's still got the misprinting problem, identical in every way to the first copy!

I've e-mailed Mrs Revell, the "Responsible Committee Secretary" as listed on the cover with information on the problem, but that wasn't until nearly 5pm today, so I doubt if it will be seen until Monday. I've also asked if they can extend the date for comments to allow for the delays in responding that this BSI error is causing.

If any of you also have faulty copies, can I suggest you e-mail her as well.

Update - No response from BSI for weeks. Eventually get through to Mrs Revell today (the 'Responsible Secretary') and find I should have been sent a revised printout with the 'Draft' in open print so the document  was readable. Unable to extend date for comments.

BSI has agreed to refund me for the purchase of an unreadable copy.

My latest information is that BS 9999 is to be published in October 2008, all 731 pages of it.  It will replace most parts of the current 5588 series, not part 1, although they will be run alongside BS 9999 for 6 months.  The commentary/recommendation part of BS which I find very good has gone and there are references in anumber fo sections to similar parts in other sections.  But, there will be an index.

The section on the disabled has been beefed up but again appears in different sections.

Just reading my pre publishing final copy of this document.  5839 Fire alarms systems are graded as types. removed in the 2002 edition and there are no mentions of Cats L4 and L5.  Emergency esacpe lighting is in 5266 part1 and part 7.  Silly me I thought it was part 8.
