Title: Abuse
Post by: Chris Houston on March 31, 2008, 12:41:43 AM
Ladies and Gents,

Our newest users, who I cannot refer to by name due to the vulgar nature of the user name they briefly had, joined our site about an hour ago and posted various abusive, insulting and vulgar messages.  I promptly banned him, found out where he lives (approximatly) and his internet service provider, deleted his messages and reported him to his telephone service provider and internet service provider.

These posts were not like anything we have had on FireNet before.  I happened to be online within a few minutes of this and was able to take action immediatly.

If anyone else spots anything like this, please contact me though the site.  Most of the time I'll be able to take action very promptly.

I took the unusual step of making public the details I have on the person so that others might think twice before engaging in such stupid activity on our site. :)

Chris

Forum Admin (in Judge Dread mode) ;)

<--------- Always misses the fun :(

Prompt and decisive forum administration is a rare and wonderful thing (especially at twenty to one in the morning).

Nice one Boss !!

Would you like a job on one of my boards. My admins are always in bed by eleven :D

One is quite enough thanks, unless of course your board gives out tips on free Guiness sampling evenings or is the Australian Beach Volleyball fan club, then I'll decline.  :)

Yeah twenty to one in the morning Chris?

Sounds very convenient that you "just happened" to be there if you ask me Mr Houston :)

Are you suse you didnt log on as an abusive member then come back as yourself to ban him and look all heroic and masterful ? hmmm?

No seriously its good to know you are making sure that these forums stay friendly and abuse free - especially as you do it voluntarily and in your own time.

Nice idea, but it wouldn't work.  When I ban someone it is not just the email, but the IP address and every other IP address that that user name has ever used that are barred forver and ever and ever.

Barred for eternity - thats good to know.

On another forum i use there isn't that facility and we have a situation whereby a consitent spammer causes havoc, gets banned but just logs on using another email address time and time again depsite having the same IP address!

You'd think they had nothing better do wouldnt you! rascals!

We don't tollerate fools on FireNet.  I can ban people for any length of time, but the default is until the end of time.

We get spammers here now and again trying to sell you all cheap hotels, but last night was a new level of idiot.

What sort of abuse was it? Derogatory to individuals? A whole regional service? Or just a bit of general being a muppet?

I don't want to know too much, but you have got my curiosity sensor tingling.

Don't you start or we will both end up banned!

And you are one to talk I was looking at some of the old posts - you and Colin Todd used to go hell for leather with each other.

I think you both had a soft spot for each other really.

yes dear Old Toddy, we did have some differences of opinion but we always kissed and made up.....well not actually kissed....so far as I can remember.

I'm just sometimes misunderstood and people think I'm grumpy and SHOUT!!!!, I'm such a quite chappy usually, that Retty's the one to watch!!

Colin and I are good friends (as a result of FireNet), but I used to work for a company that he did not like and we were not friends then.  Especially after I emailed him and asked him if he wanted to specify/buy/learn about our products.

The posts were what you would expect of a 13 year old who tried to fit every insult and profanity into a post.  Playground style.

I don't ban people for having opinions, and I tend to do things behind the scenes or informally.  Nobody who uses the board has ever needed a temporary ban and I can count on my fingers the amount of "yellow cards" I've ever had to issue.  So if you ever had one, you in a minority and have your name in my naughty book.
