Just looking a bit of advice.I have been a fire alarm and fixed extinguishing engineer for 16 years now (prior to this I was an assistant/general maintenance type!) and all of my training has been company based (by two of major worldwide ones).
However,I'm starting to see myself at 50 and 60 doing the same thing and fancy doing something different yet still fire alarm related - any advice as to possible directions that I could take that don't involve OTE 50k with a basic of 10K!!

Undertake part time or Online, higher education, it has never been late, particularly in fire engineering related…., American's fire protection institutions provides On-Line training, unfortunately in UK I haven’t found any…
In Greenwich University there are intensive course in fire dynamics and fire modelling and evacuations… for five days but once a year, look forward next March-April, if interested…
The other chance is university of leads but there is no on-line studding available yet but part time is...
The reason behind that… you may end up your career teaching the young generations with a good salary :)

Thanks for that - only problem is I am in Belfast and the wife mightn't be too happy!!
I will however look closer to home for further education courses but would like suggestions as to what I could consider.

Love ‘KNOWLEDGE’ more then ‘Women’ and ‘Drink’, it's my principles, even every things has its own place of interest…
At the moment it’s America the most advanced in many things, try to get training from them on-line look at the following:
http://www.sfpe.org/Education/SFPE%20Online%20Learning.aspx
England still behind America in many things for some reasons… also every thing takes longer time in England, I don’t know why? Other countries are growing so quick like China, India and Brazil, I personally been in France several times and have seen their Hotel’s fire alarm systems in a horrible conditions….
England is the top European country in terms of fire safety by the way!…
The only serious difference between EU standard and BS standard in terms of Electrical installations is the earthing, bonding and so on…
Seek more knowledge is the best thing ever (In my opinion), Einstein said in his last minutes:
‘Now, I have known that I don’t know any thing’.
Even he has been the chap behind what is called the ‘Modern Physics’
Seek Knowledge and ask as much as you can, even you think that you know!
Some times wisdom comes from the most boring and crazy person (in the eyes of the none crazy people)
I don’t know why! :)

*laughs out loud* nice one. My daughter is a Cena fanatic!
It never is too late Buzzard but I know where you are coming from. Your way forward isnt necessarily part time or ful time further education but it would help. You should be able to fit that around your existing job. There is no shortcuts but your experience i would suggest with a good fire risk assessment course could send you into the fire safety management role. Hospitals, universities, factories careorganisations are always after fire safety managers and i heard that age is a good point considered by employers because older people are less likely to burn candle at both ends or jump jobs every five minutes.

It's good old English/Brit humour Benz and it generally (like guinness) doesn't travel well.
