Is it acceptable for lift shafts to open into the loft space with no capping/closing.
I can stand in the loft and see the lift going up and down.

If the loft space extends over the accommodation no it should be enclosed - walls should be 1 hour fire resistance with a half hour access door. If it is in its own little roofspace over the lift shaft and staircase only its not likely to be a problem.

Is the building less than a year old - if so refer to Buildng control.

PS same applies to staricase walls and compartment walls - these should extend to roof and any roof space bigger than 20 m should be subdicided with cavity barriers.

Thanks for that, building is brand new, I have found quite a lot of other probs too. (not my job, I am only a fire alarm engineer, but something seems to be a bit rotten here!
