Title: Fire Safety Adjournment Debate
Post by: mark1london on February 02, 2005, 12:27:29 PM: Anyone seen the Hansard of this - makes interesting reading. Only the front bench spokesmen for the Lib Dems and Conservatives turned up.

Labour Mp's totalled 9

Of the 16 MP's on the All Party Fire Safety Group- precisely 3 turned up. Begs the question do those MP's on the Group really care about Fire Safety or not.

Any thoughts on the debate itself?

Lot of talk on Kitchens, but can't see any ref to Heat Alarms, the only sort suitable for Kitchens, and interlinked to smoke alarms of course.
Smoke alarms even with hush are not recommended for kitchens.

Post by: Gel on February 12, 2005, 12:18:30 PM: In England & Wales under Approved Document B, [from 2000] they are required, along with 1 interlinked smoke alarm per floor, but its dependent on kitchen layout, so not all are caught.

If there's a door between kitchen & escape route it isnt mandatory;
my view is that even if door is installed, its highly likely the doors will be left ajar/open, so negating implied benefit..of it being partial fire stop.

SCOTLAND still has no H/Alarm requirement but their causes of fire show kitchen location as the source of most Residential fires; recall in last ODPM figures I saw it was 57%.

In US they do permit smoke alarms in kitchens however Mark, on assumption
that they have much larger kitchens, better air circulation.

Post by: wee brian on February 13, 2005, 09:29:23 PM: I doubt the heat alarm will do any good anyway. People Hurt in kitchen fires are often already aware that there is one (i.e. it’s their own fault).

The ones that do need warning will be better served by the smoke alarm in the hall. Bizarrely, the only time the heat might just go before the smoke is if there is a closed door there!

I can see the advantage when er....you have a fire? but does it give the occupants time to react and extinguish the fire? Are there any hard stats to be found on the effectiveness of heat alarms?
