Title: EON power save multiway adapters
Post by: Ashley Wood on August 28, 2008, 03:08:57 PM
I have recently come across a couple of these devices. My concerns are that they state 'do not exceed 13 amp', my client has 4 way extension cable plugged into these. This will obviously exceed the 13 amp rating of the EON unit. Now, as we do not advocate the use of multiway adapters for obvious reasons, what's the situation with these little beauties? Any experience or ideas please?

Correctly fused and maintained, whats the problem with multiway adapters?

Ah,  multi adaptors can be usefull but the rule is that the total fuse rating of each appliance used should not exceed 13A i.e two 5Amp and one 3amp is ok.

Not like this one over 30 plugs into numerous multi adaptors some supplying other multi adaptors, all going back to a double wall socket the two plugs and cable leading to the sockets were hot to the touch.

As with all things , general Joe public don't read , and understand what is right and wrong .
Christmas is always a good one , 'how to burn your house down in one simple step' - use and abuse a trailing/extension lead.
It would make sense if manufacturers only used moulded plugs and change fuse sizes to suit the carrier so that a 5 will only ever be a 5 , at least that way you stand half a chance.
But then again you will find people will want to chop off the plug , and start again , well thats another story.

A quick look at your attached photo would indicate all the plugs and extension leads have been pat tested.

One does wonder how many PAT testers 'shine & sign' like some of the less salubnrious extinguisher companies as I've seen stuff labelled as passed that should easily fail after a few seconds scrutiny.

I don't think a lot of PAT testers take account of loads, overloads and adapters and at best look at each item in isolation - look at the cable, the fuse for the appliance and bung it on the tester and ignore what it then gets plugged back into.

I for one would & have failed anything I've PAT tested that has a hot to the touch plug until the cause is identified & resolved.

The worse case I ever saw was at a christmas toy shop window display in a Co-op store. They had a whole network of adaptors coming from a 3 way block adaptor in a single socket and then other connectors daisy chained together - I calculated 42 amps being sucked out of a single socket.

And they had replicated the stars and stripes flag by getting some striped fabric and pushing 52 240volt round bulbs straight through it.
Humbug said I and closed it all down immediately.
