I seem to have something in my mind that says there are special regs/guidelines covering exit signs in football grounds...am I imagining it or is it just standard regs/BS. Jim are you there?

The Green Guide "Guide to Safety at Sports Grounds" published by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport that supports safety certificates issued under the Safety of Sports Grounds Act 1975 or the Fire Safety and Safety of Places of Sport Act 1987 details some requirements
BS5499-4 Safety signs, including fire safety signs — Part 4: Code of practice for escape route signing also illustrates signage in stadia

Thanks for the call, The requirements for escape route signs is exactly the same as any other built environment and BS 5499 Part 4 is the guidance document. There is one small concession in as much as escape route signs used to locate vommitory exits do not require the use of directional arrow.

vommitory exits do not require the use of directional arrow.
Does anyone know what a "vommitory exit" is

Does anyone know what a "vommitory exit" is
A vomitory is defined as an access route built into the gradient of a stand which directlylinks spectator accommodation to concourses, and/or routes for ingress, egress and emergency evacuation.
Passage through a vomitory can be either level or via stairways, and can flow parallel or transverse to the rows of terraces or seats.

originally used in Roman stadia (e.g. the Colliseum) the 'vomitore' were to get the vast crowds out of the stadium and on their way to do valuable activities.
Now correctly used to describe any large capacity crowd exits from stadia. The only difference is the lack of feeding unfortunates to the lions.

Ah the good old days!
