Do bedroom doors in elderly residential care premises require SCD. Building has been operating for approx 15 years without any, frames to bedrooms have strips and seals in place but no closers.
-
The guidance issued under the Fire Safety order and the Building Regulations Approved document B 2006 both now set a benchmark standard for all bedroom doors to be provided with self closing devices. Swing free closers are ideal in residential care homes. One driver for the change in policy was the Rosepark fire in Scotland where 14 persons died from smoke inhalation as a result of open doors when a small fire occurred in a store cupboard.

Also, Part B (Para 3.52) will let you off having self closing devices to the bedroom doors if the building is sprinklered.
