Can anyone tell me what BS covers AOV's for smoke ventilation and is there any specific advice with regards to the placement and type of detection for this purpose within this standard or is it somewhere within BS5839-1?
I'd appreciate your helps?
Thanks

Thanks for getting back Jokar and Kurnal
BS9999 refers me to BS EN 12101-2
and I'll take a look at BS7346

Hightower,
12101-2 is good for the standard of the AOV in terms of construction and performance so if you're involved in the selection and installation of the AOVs that's what you want.
The other guidance you might be interested in depends on what the AOVs are for.
If they are in common corridors of flats then they are for smoke dilution/clearance and they can be located as per ADB and suppliers recommendations, etc. The detector(s) that actuate the AOVs should be in the space you are trying to protect. The AOVs only normally need open on local detection.
Other possible positions/functions of AOVs include ventilating atria, providing inlet air for smoke control, providing leakage paths for pressurisation systems, ventilating firefighting stairs, ventilating certain lobbies, and so on. The requirements for actuating them are different in each case and so, to answer your question precisely, we must know what the AOVs are there for.

Thanks for your reply - I now know what BS12101-2 says as I just got fleeced (sorry, I just bought) for the princely sum of £80.00 to purchase it.
The detector(s) that actuate the AOVs should be in the space you are trying to protect.
What I am still trying to locate is where any BS guidance says that detection should be as you have stated above and perhaps in line with BS5839-1 or otherwise?

Hi Hightower,
Various BSs that discuss the provisions of AOVs say little more than that detectors should be installed as per BS5839-1.
It sounds like your AOVs are in flat corridors so ADB also has some specific comments about their locations. I don't think you'll find anything else for this type of installation. Apart from, of course, the manufacturers/suppliers who you may find most helpful in giving advice to support your purchases from them.
