Title: Hotel extention query

Hi
An old hotel that has detection and sounders in all the bedrooms is having alterations to 4 of the bedrooms.
The 4 rooms are being extended outwards by about 6 meters ( I know, too big and expensive for me to spend the night there)!
My query is regarding a conversation with one of the builders the other day who mentioned that a building regs guy from the council had told him that we might need to put another detector in each of the bedrooms because of a 9 meters from the door rule?
I thought that the detector in the bedroom was to protect the door and we need 75dB at the bedhead, this we will continue to have, so where does the extra detector rule come from,
I'm sure sombody is typing in the answer right now!!!!

Are you not talking about the 7.5M rule?
If the room is being increased in size to the extent that the single detector is more than 7.5M from any point then BC may want an additional detector.

Thats life isnt it. Fire alarm systems being designed on the hoof by builders and building control officers. I bet the architects plans say the alarm system is to be designed in accordance with BS5839 part 1 1988 as most of them still do.

And BS5266 Pt1 to 1988.

I think someone is getting travel distances confused with the BS5839 alarm spec. Travel distance is not mentioned in BS5839 apart from regarding search distance and travel to a call point.

It is a good job that building control know what they are talking about.  :-\

Assuming the detectors are Heat (................) isn't 7.5 for smoke? (Less for heat)

You are correct Davo, but heat or smoke? Thats another issue which recently had been causing much debate.
