Title: London, Glasgow and Liverpool Salvage Corps
Post by: Midland Retty on March 31, 2010, 02:50:40 PM
Hi Chaps and Chapesses.

I have been tasked to produce a brief presentation about the work and history of the Salvage Corps across the country for an event which is geared toward " fire service heritage ".

A similar thread asking about the work of the corps was posted here some some years back, so I thought it may be beneficial to revisit the subject in case anyone has any fresh information they would like to share about the corps.

Alas very little information seems to exist on the interweb about the corps, so any comments, recollections and info would be gratefully received!

It may b e worth visiting the previous thread http://www.kingfell.com/~forum/index.php?topic=231.0 there may be some relevant information. I know a large amount of documents are located at the Liverpool registry office but at the moment there are major refurbishment being carried out which may cause problems but you could contact them, you never know. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/a2a/results.aspx?tab=2&Page=1&ContainAllWords=liverpool+salvage+corps

Professor Retty, You will find some info on the history of all 3 salvage corps in my reading experience (book) "A comprehensive guide to fire safety", available from all good booksellers (or at half price to friends from ourselves). I have no doubt that a F&RS of the standing and excellence of the West Mids will have a copy in their library, as without it their library would be incomplete.

Thanks for all your replies folks... Lord Todd I shall consult our library, I shall be very annoyed and rather dissapointed if they dont have a copy of your work available.

There's a new book called 'Tinderbox Heroes' about the Cheapside Street fire in Glasgow. As Salvage Corpsmen were lost at that horrendous fire I would suggest there may be details about Glasgow Salvage Corps.
