Hello all,
I've got my interview next week to join my local retained station. Could I ask if you have any advice or information regarding the interview? what to expect, type of questions etc...
Many thanks.

Questions are basic, I.E give them a time in your life when you've made a change to a job you've done.
They're very basic really just trying to see if you've got the skills they want.

Yup,
questions etc can't be too technical coz you're not in the job yet.
Probably ask what you understand by 'Health & Safety' and if you've come across an instance of it in you're current job,Same with 'equality'.How you feel about carrying out Community fire Safety visits, working within a team, working under pressure etc.
They're really just seeing what you can offer and if you've got common sense !
May ask things like ' How do you think you would react if you had to cut a badly burned body out of a car?' just be honest, if you think you'd vomit then get on with the job , just say so. They're not trying to trick you.
If it's anything like my interview it was pretty informal, me, Subby (WM!!) and Station Officer from Wholetime unit.
Best of luck, you won't regret going for it.

BE HONEST!
It might also be worth your while trying to find out a little bit about the brigade your going for like the CFO's name, how many stations etc etc just a bit of back ground, what they're really looking for though is common sense.
They might also ask youy hoe you think it might impact on your personal/work life, i.e. do you have the full support of your wife/girlfriend... what happens if you are just about to sit down to a meal you've taken 2 hours to prepare and you get a shout?
If you are able to turn out from work do you have the support needed?
basically just be honest and you'll be fine!!!
Good luck!

My retained interview consisted of an informal chat with the retained LFF(CM) and the Station Commander.
Very informal, just wanted to talk about what cover you can give, why you want to join, what your main job is etc etc.

Ours is based on the PQAs - see www.fireservice.co.uk for details of these (recruitment section) I also recommend actually asking the FRS what the questions are based on - we would give you some idea!
