Title: Colour coding of manual activation points for fixed installations
Post by: Tom Sutton on September 27, 2013, 09:45:28 AM
"I'm trying to find the standard for the colour coding of manual activation points for fixed installations i.e. fire alarm call points are red and fixed installations are yellow but based on what standard."

I received the above query recently and I am not sure where to start, I always assumed the the manual activation points for fire extinguishing equipment would be red?

Tom
All such manual devices should conform to BS12094-3. This sets out colour requirements and technical specifications. It is important that they are different in colour to the normal fire alarm system- you would not want to set of the gas suppression system by mistake thinking you had operated the fire alarm.

BS7273-1 makes this point in connection with gaseous fire protection systems saying they should be "visually different". BS10294-3 says manual triggering controls should be yellow and electrical stop controls should be blue.

Hi Kurnal it appears it is water mist/sprinklers and it appears there is no BS but there is a European standard, EN 14972, also there is an ISO standard but that is only for water mist nozzles. I passed on your information on the gaseous fire protection systems and it seems the colour coding of the manual devices originated there, if he wants more info he will need to get hold of the euro standard.

Tam, You can Never have red points to trigger an extinguishing agent.
