Dont suppose anyone in the Edinburgh area could lend me one for literally 5 minutes to show people on a training course?

Download "NoiSee" on your smartphone (not calibrated of course but could be good enough for demonstration purposes)?

I would have thought that a company advertising that they carry out "Inspections and audits of systems to determine compliance with British Standards" would have the resources to obtain a meter.

That is the point. Because we do inspections all our meters were out at the time I wanted to show people one in Edinburgh.  I am not sure how the fact that we do this work regularly as advertised impacts on what you describe as resources to obtain one.

if you draw a blank Colin you could take a look at Maplin where for about 40 quid you can buy a sound level meter that just about looks the part with switchable scales , A rating scales and other settings, multiplication scales, peak hold etc, the only thing lacking is any evidence of proper calibration. but for a demo should be ok.

Thanks, Big Al, but the client was just curious as to what a meter looked like, so told us not to go to any trouble if I was not able to bring one with me.  The course went well without the prop, and they were totally happy.

Not at all Dave. On the contrary, I am always grateful for people to highlight our services as we do very little advertising.  To amplify AA's point, we are one of only a very few independent consulting practices certificated under BAFE Sp 203-1 for the inspection and verification of fire detection and fire alarm systems.
