I have a project where I am struggling to find some final exit door furniture serving a building with very high value goods. Security provision being insisted on by the insurers is frustrating any attempts I have made to come up with a solution. Plus, the numbers of occupiers that will use this exit will require a panic bar or similar crush prevention mechanism.
The insurance company insist that the final exit (a pair of 1m wide doors) each have to be fixed in four points ? one fixing on each edge of the door. So the fixings will be mainly shoot bolts and are to be fixed:
> Top of the door into the frame
> Bottom of the door into the floor
> Side - via the hinges
> (and the problem), on the adjoining edges where the doors meet where the fixing will be into the adjacent door (this will require one side of the pair of doors to be opened before the other side can be operated)
I hope this makes sense so far!
Then problem number two, one half of the pair of doors is required as a circulation route and will be used scores of times per day.
Lastly, the insurance company will not allow mag-locks, so electronically operated panic bars are not an option.
So does anyone know of a panic bolt type door mechanism, that can be used on a pair of heavy final exit doors that have fixings on all four side (including from one door into the other leaf) and where one leaf is required to be opened hundreds of times a week???

I would suggest contacting these people, this type of thing is their speciality:

Thank you very much. Their website looks very promising

Thanks Fishy - much appreciated
This job has lead to an enquiry from a similar type high value occupancy who for security reasons, are asking for the operation of a particular final exit to be delayed by a few seconds. That is, between the operation of the door furniture and the door being openable, there's a delay of a few - perhaps 10 seconds (The actual timings to be decided in due course).
I recall this type of door being permitted on a London nightclub to prevent uninvited guests being allowed in as a public safety initiative, but I cannot recall if there is a BS or some other standard which covers this type of mechanism.
Any ideas???
Many thanks

There was an IFE / CACFOA publication by Graham Shiel that covered this, if you cant find it through google let me know as I have an electronic copy.
We have discussed it before http://www.crisis-response.com/forum/?topic=1013.0

Thats obsolete Big Al

I know but I think theres much in there that has never been superseded eg advice on delayed exit and approriate levels of management supervision in such scenarios. Situations outside the scope of BS 9999 and 7273-4. Unless you can advise otherwise Colin.

Delayed exit is mentioned in BS 7273-4.

Colin I might be missing it but whilst section 4 in general is clearly dated in the way it describes the use of computerised systems I was thinking of recommendations 4.2.1 to 4.2.5 in Graham Shiel's document that do not seem to be replicated elsewhere. BS7273-4 refers to risk assessment - the old document does give some basic standards to aim for and includes some practical guidance for such situations as described by Messy.
