Title: MoE from Open Plan Flats

I review a lot of Fire Strategies for blocks of flats. Many new flats are open plan with the cooking appliances near the entrance/exit. I keep coming across the "1.8m" rule, the escape route must be at least 1.8m away from the hob. Can you tell me where the 1.8m rule comes from?

AD B just talks about Cooking facilities being remote from the main entrance door and not impeding the escape route from anywhere in the flat. BS9991 doesn't give much more either.

This question has come up before and it appears it's based on standard radiated heat calculations from a hob on fire in a sprinklered flat - this on paper infers you can safely walk past a kitchen fire as long as you are 1.8m from it.

There is a lot of modelling to support this. In fact, I think this dimension is included in the new BS 9991 (draft)
