Title: New Hotel design guide pre 1992
Post by: xan on February 15, 2022, 04:35:56 PM
Could anyone tell me what the design guide for a new hotel was prior to the 1992 Approved Doc B?

I don't recall coming across anything specific beyond the architect having to have regard for the requirements in "Guide to Fire Precautions in Premises Used as Hotels and Boarding Houses Which Require a Fire Certificate: Fire Precautions Act 1971" and any relevant parts of the old BS5588 series

Other premises had to follow the various bits of CP3 (or in the late 80's BS5588) as set in the mandatory rules - https://www.kentbuildingcontrol.co.uk/pdf/approved-document-b-1985-moe.pdf

Go back further than the 80's and it's a bit grey, there were the certification requirements and the Post War Building Studies. There are other members on here who should be able to fill in the gaps!

The ADB 1985 didn't contain B1 so for that you would have to consider Anthony's reply

No I know, but it had B2-B4, so it would just be means of escape and warning that was missing. Warning would be L2, though in practice L1. MoE would probably need cognizance of the purple guide but that was not much before 1992, and there would be no point in the old red guide because it didnt even ask for s/c on bedroom doors. if in London, their big red guide would probably be the thing.
