Major fire safety reform to come into force in October
ODPM News Release 2006/0034

06 March 2006

New fire safety rules affecting all non-domestic premises in England and Wales will come into force on 31 October 2006 the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister has announced.

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order, made in June 2005, is the biggest overhaul of fire safety legislation in decades.
Originally, it was due to come into force next month (April) but in January the department announced it was deferring to give business and stakeholders more time to prepare.

Announcing the new date in a written statement, the ODPM Minister responsible for fire safety Jim Fitzpatrick said today (6th) March:

“The Government’s over-riding aim is to save more people from death and injury by reducing risk and preventing fires.

“Over the coming months, we will continue to work with stakeholders to ensure that all those affected by the new rules have the support that they need.”

The ODPM is working with a range of partners from industry and the fire and rescue service on a publicity strategy to raise awareness of the new laws amongst those affected.

the Press Realease I have, dated 21st March 2006, timed at 13.42 states quite clearly  " New fire safety rules.......will come into  force on 1st October 2006".....More confusion!!!!

ODPM sent out the wrong date originally but it was later corrected [Pity not more of their mistakes get corrected]  At last count it will be 1st October 200.................6 or was that 7

Fire Safety Order in force 31/10/06,

Question:

Am I right in thinking that the Scottish Executive have already already enacted a version of the Order in the form of the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005 and that we are currently awaiting the development of the proposed Northern Ireland Act?

Or is both the Scottish version and the English and Welsh version being implemented at the same time?

The RRO Fire Safety is scheduled to come into effect on 01/10/06. Regarding your other question.... who knows?
