Fire Door Upgrade
« on: October 09, 2006, 08:33:00 AM »
Operating as facilities managers in refurbished PFI schools, we would like to upgrade our corridor fire doors to FD30S (smoke).

Single action doors do not seem to be a problem, however the double swing doors are problematic, with top hinges not allowing the refitted intumescent strips and brushes to create the seal as required. (strips covered with original certification).

The doors are Chiltern with hardwood framed.

Has anyone procured a retrofit smoke seal with global certification for such a set up, that would be acceptable to Building Control?

Any advice or leads to products welcome.

Regards

C

Why are building control involved? Are you upgrading as a result of a risk assessment or is this related to building work?

If its building work then it will probably be easier to replace the doors than mess around with them.

If it isnt then it may not be necessary to meet any particular standard. The key function of most cross corridor doors is to prevent the spread of smoke.  Providing smoke seals where you can will be a significant improvement (assuming the door still shuts properly)

Thanks for the quick reply.

Hard to explain.
Basically defect from building contract, with ongoing dispute between BC and contractor. Dont want to comment further there.

Schools have no Building Control Sign off.

As operators, we are looking for a solution to the problem rather than sitting on the fence. Procative so to speak.

All doors less than 4 years old and are well maintained ( recent retrofitted hold backs, to deter damage from occupants.)

Nightmare!!

Try talking to IFSA - the Intumescent fire seals assoc, they may be able to point you to a supplier.

Auntie Lynn ant ASDMA may be able to help too.
