One for the sprinkler gods & structural bods!
« on: February 06, 2007, 11:06:12 AM »
I have a single storey factory classified as 'High hazard' (new build). The building is a portal steel frame construction. If the building were being built without the sprinklers I would have to clad the steel. I am being told that this is not required due to the fact that a sprinkler system is being installed. If this is correct, what standard/s should apply to the sprinkler design?

The answers will be found in Approved document B.

The protection may have been required for compliance with functional requirement B3, B4 or both. Table A1 and A2 in appendix A set the fire performance criteria, and to qualiify for the relaxation allowed against the installation of sprinklers the installation should comply with the recommendations in paragraphs 0.16 - 0.18

As a general rule you dont need fire protection on single storey structures. If you are near the site boundary the external walls (and supporting structure) may need protection. ADB gives a 50% reduction on sprinklered buildings.
