Class D Selection Enquiry
« on: March 21, 2007, 04:14:25 PM »
Has anybody any info on the selection and suitability ranges for Class D extinguishers and Wheeled Trolley Units?
Manufacturers, ABS etc are slow in providing the info.

BS5306:8 2000 advise taking expert advise on the selection and provision so I hand it out to you guys!

I have a client with 5 containers ranging from ".25 sq yd to 1 sq yd", based in separate locations within one warehouse facility.

Thanks

A 9 kilo class D extinguisher can usually cope with 1 kilo of magnesium, based on the Powder manufacturers data. Have you tried US sites for Amerex & Badger or the German manufacturers like Gloria? ABS aren't the first people Id try and ask.

BS/EN documents & other UK guidance sidesteps Class D a lot - if the above manufacturers are also no good I suggest going online for NFPA stuff that covers the subject area better

Thanks Anthony,

I had only tried ABS as I had a catalogue in front of me, they are not my first choice either.

I have given the UK supliers a call but had no info back as yet. Online seems the better option.

I just wondered if enyone had the info to hand.

Thanks Again :)

To all who may be interested in this subject:

There are no BS Ratings for class D due to the diversity of fuels (differing burning rates) and quantities/ size of metals (powder, filings etc). A Test cannot therefore be carried out to gain a BSEN3 standard.

Having spoken to many manufacturers of extinguishers, BSI, FETA, BAFE and powder manufacturers UK and abroad, the same response is received.
