« on: June 07, 2007, 12:56:11 PM »
Hello everyone, i have just purchased a small office, however i noticed one of the red boxes(call points sorry!!) was damaged i have since bought one and intended to fix it myself, its a gent one and im told its ok to fit to a conventional system(whatever that means!!). However looking on the back of the call point theres some terminals two for 3 and two for two having no instructions or any experience i havent got a clue what goes where, can anyone give a total novice ant advice thanks.

For safety's sake you need a competent person to do this job for you.
There are many different types of alarm system and although most red boxes are similar on the outside, the method of operation and where they are in the alarm system makes for internal differences, even in the simplest system some will require end of line resistors and some will not. Fitting the wrong type will stop the system working or give you an uncorrectible fault condition.

If a non competent person makes changes to a life safety alarm system then the BS5839 inspection and commissioning certificate will be invalid and it could be an offence under the Regulatory reform order- if interpreted as tampering or interfering with a system installed for fire safety.

I have been in the fire industry for 33 years and have a good feel for alarm systems and electronics but would not consider myself competent to service my gas boiler, wire in a socket or replace a call point especially in a workplace environment.
