instructor training? Can anyone help?
« on: January 12, 2007, 10:58:31 PM »
Hi all. Im a little new on here...so here goes.

I am a serving operational firefighter with 11 years service and im desperately looking for a good "hot fire training instructor" course and a "confined space incl. rope rescue instructor" course. I am looking to finance these courses myself and am prepared to go abroad etc...I have my own safety training company outside of the fire service which is partly why im looking for these courses, but obviously it would enable me to look at my own fire service training. I am an instructor with nationally recognised certs in many fields such as first aid etc already, but want some really good courses under my belt as refreshers. Can anybody help please?

Shaun,

Just out of interest, are you planning on giving up on the fire fighting career, or having 2 jobs?

Shaun

Best FBTi in the country - Devon Fire & Rescue. They train in conjunction with the Swedes. They are the only FRS in the country that have advanced FB techniques. Others are still teaching the same stuff rom 10 years ago.
Any views I express are my own and not my employers. Still confused!

Avoid FSC, had a one week course in Sweden that was great (H&S might not agree) - I also have heard that Devon is where the national expertise is.

I agree with Scud.
Sweden is a great place to go although the course I went on was a bit cocked up due to some confusion about us being there for a FABT instructors course and not a fire awareness course. But  after that was sorted the rest of the trip was well worth the effort and the instructors and training facilities were first class.
If you like writing essays and memorising pointless facts about BA set internal diameters then Moreton is the place for you.

Just done the BAI course at Moreton in Marsh and generally, the feedback I got about it from others on the course was that there are better course available and the FBTI course in Devon is the best place in this country to do it, with regards to your courses though I must add a word of warning, not all of them are internationally recognised or transferable. I know the BAI course at Moreton is the only UK BAI course that is internationally recognised. Whilst some folks may have has better experiences at other places you need to ask yourself what you want to do with the qualifications before you go spending money on the wrong course.

Good luck anyway and I hope you get what you need.

Kaiser, point taken but just because a course is regonised internationally, if it is no good (not saying FSC courses are rubbish!!) why would a FRS wish to waste their money on the course.

As long as courses have been x-mapped against the standards used in the British FRS (NOS, Role Maps, EFS Modules etc) and they provide quality training to the individual and FRS it has to be worth attending.

A tick in a box from an external organisation is a bonus. TWFRS have accreditation from the IFE for their courses, but does it make it better and more worthwhile than a FRS Training Centre that doesnt have accreditation??
Any views I express are my own and not my employers. Still confused!

Good point, well presented mate.
I only explained this about international recognition in case it needs to be used abroad and needs to be an internationally recognised qualification.  I am not a marketing manager for the college by any means.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I havent managed to get on a course as yet, but I will take your advice and steer clear of the college. Oh and as for the initial responce, I do have 2 jobs at the moment as I have had for over 10 years, but I may well leave the service depending on the extent of our "modernisation". Thanks all
