Loft Conversion

I'm considering converting my loft into a study but do not want to enclose the staircase of my small house. Would residential sprinklers be a solution?

Depends on the layout of the floors below the loft. If there is a conventional stair which does not have any 'protection' then I think that the installation of sprinklers would be sufficient to allow the conversion to go ahead with only interlinked detectors being provided given the use of the loft.

Possibly if you are in a two storey house, have extensive AFd and also if you have a fire door to the loft room and an escape window.

Sprinklers may help but you need to be clear what you are expecting them to achieve.  If it's a smoke free escape route, then you may be disappointed.  If it's a controlled fire while you wait to be rescued, you may be more satisfied.  AFD will give early warning that the escape route contains smoke, but it might not be early enough to enable escape through a tenable space.
