Moving Into The 21st Century!!!
« on: July 06, 2008, 08:46:01 AM »
Hi all.
Our brigade seems to be using the above phrase to justify everything it does recently.

Firstly the beds went, then changes to shift patterns, then more changes to shift patterns, work routines etc etc and now any comfy chairs and social equipment are to be removed from all stations as well!

Yes, certain things must change i understand, but for this to be done just out of spite or to gain someone promotion is not right!

I was just wondering if changes throughout the country reflected our brigade?

Sounds like the usual "new speak" to me. As soon as you hear phases like this and "the majority wants this" or "it is in the public interest", translate as "we cannot really justify this but we are going to do it anyway and anyone who opposes this is an old fossil (and please Gordon can I have my QFSM/MBE now?)".

Sorry my cynicism is showing (again)
The presence of those seeking the truth is infinitely to be preferred to those who think they've found it.

Whatever next? All firefighters must stand to attention next to their lockers for their whole shift, only moving when the system goes down.

Oh thats nothing lads

The two brigades I work for are going regional and amalgamting with four other brigades within the next 10 years.

Loads of fire stations will go, and pumps will be parked up at strategic points waiting for calls.

There will be regional" stations" where crews can grab refreshments and do training - the rest of their time will be spent on the road - called to wherever they are needed, running around the new enlarged super-county brigade patch

Blue sky thinking Im told. Must be great for reducing the brigades carbon footprint with appliances that do on average 8 mpg, but then I guess theyre thinkin its more environmentally to do that than powering and heating lots of fire stations.

If it isnt broke dont try and fix it, alas the cynic in me says we have been had. And the beds? wow well they take them away and give you easy chairs at £400 a pop, that are supposed to recline but dont, so the brigade then spends more money to buy the model that does recline !

The snooker tables and recebntly purchased special super dooper reclining chairs are now being taken away.

The shift patterns were changed, didnt work, cost more money, now theyre thinking of changing it back.

Ranks to roles havent really achieved anything accept cost the brigade a lot of money/

Its not the change I object to so much (although change for hange sake does annoy me) what i do dispair about is the obscene ammount of money wasted by UK Brigades - if the general public heard about what goes on they wouldnt be overly impressed!

We must be very lucky in Tyne & Wear to have a Chief (recently taken over from Chief who had similar sensible ideas) that is not willing to change things for change sake!

We have had one shift change, but not like some of the other FRS. They moved the finsih time from 1700 to 1800! Wow not a lot of bother caused there then.

The Chief has openly said (about shift changes) that he will only look into a radical shift change if someone can prove that it will be beneficial to the service. And as several of you have said all of the radical shift changes have not worked.

The only worry is that some of the Chief's from around the country that make radical changes get the ears of people in power. Then he might not have any option to change as he will be "encouraged" to do so by DCLG.

Yes we have lost snooker / pool tables to make room for more community rooms, but we have been given a monthly allowance as compensation.

All the new stations have private study bedrooms, and the planned stations have same facilities, so it does not look like they will take beds away the same as thye are not looking to change shifts.

So overall we might have a whinge every so often, but compared to some of you from around the country we don't have too much to complain about.
Any views I express are my own and not my employers. Still confused!

Count your self lucky rips.
Once again morale is taking a nose dive in our brigade!

All the surrounding brigades have held fire on major changes and i'm sure after they look at the results of our changes they will think twice before acting!

Rips, we have heard of a brigade up north which is introducing the 24hr shift? Do you know which brigade this is?
It sounds like a real good shift to work.
