Domestic/ commercial dwelling
« on: July 29, 2008, 12:36:11 PM »
Hi, can anyone help. I have a small shop with a domestic flat above and have been told that I will need to install a means of smoke detection throughout for warning to the occupants of the flat. will the system be able to be installed to BS5839 part 6 for dwellings (grade D) or will higher grade commercial system be required.
the shop and flat are both seperate rented areas and my main concern is the occupants of the flat.
many thanks

Hi Dave

Generally a part 6 grade D system should suffice. So long as residents can be warned of a fire occuring a) in their own flat and b) the shop below then job done!

The only other thing to consider is fire separation. If you have 60 minutes fire separation between the shop and flat including the access to the flat itself then you won't need a fire alarm.

To establish if you have true 60 minutes fire seperation might be difficult, so if you cant easily find that information out then play safe and go for a fire alarm system.
