New sprinkler standard

BS EN 12845:2003  Fixed firefighting systems. Automatic sprinkler systems. Design, installation and maintenance.

Has anyone used this standard before?  It seems to have sneaked onto the scene very quietly.  I understand that it supercedes BS 5306-2 which will be withdrawn in July 2006, so I am trying to understand how the new differs from the previous standard.  Any hands-on experience you have will be gratefully received.

The stuff on water supplies - duplicate tanks etc. is where the nasty bits are. Other than that is a european version of 5306 pt2

I've been speaking with the BRE this week who have stated that the EU are not currently willing to harmonise this standard in it's current form. Therefore if the date currently reported on the FPA site is to be maintained then the UK would be going it alone.

BRE have asked the BSI to confirm what is proposed with respect to any planning change-over date.

The normal procedure would be that the EN would come into force 3 years after it is published in the EU journal - as there is no intenetion to do this at the moment then there are no firm plans for it to become a harmonised European Standard.

The LPC rules give a comparison between the BS and the BSEN.

I have come across a conflict with the BSEN in relation to protection for Shopping Centres.

Clothing has been increased in category from 1 to 2/3. This then requires high hazard protection, particularly in storage areas, for shop units to utlise the full volume of their unit to the maximum. However, the BSEN does not allow hazards greater than OH3 to be zoned - required for life safety installations.

It would appear that the water supply to life safety systems has actually been downgraded from duplicate supply to superior supply!

Any other queries then let me know. It would appear that there a few people that have really got there head inside this document due to the uncertainty of its introduction.
