Perhaps a sprinkler expert can help with my question?

Is it common practice to provide sprinkler protection to the room housing the sprinkler pumps, valves, etc.?

If so, would this also apply to residential sprinkler systems designed to comply with DD251?

Yes it is. DD251 assumes all the house will be protected other than the permitted exceptions. But the tank/ pump will not need a whacking great pumphouse as in a commerical system.

Its certainly common practice to protect the pump room in a commercial system. But as Colin says most domestic systems take up a little space at the bottom of a cupboard (which aren't protected under BS 9251)

Of course there may be blocks of flats where the pumping gear is a bit bigger.

The situation I have in mind is a residential care home type of building.  We have been able to utilise the domestic cold water tank (appropriately over sized) and locate the electric pump in an unoccupied roof area.

Thanks for the hint, Wee Brian- I see from your post that I should be refering to BS 9251.  That one sneaked in without much/any publicity.

I know there are a few changes to things like Max room size but I havent got a list of changes. I think there was a lot of debate about the protection of loft spaces but I dont know what they decided on.
