Sawdust - Expolsive concentration
« on: March 10, 2005, 10:30:52 AM »
Can any one give me information on the concentration of sawdust in the air that will cause an explosion what ignited.  Underdowns (page31) have listed various dusts and given them all a concentration, except sawdust.

Does this mean that any concentration will give an explosion or there is no potential for explosion, only fire?

i suppose it means that it depends in what form - sawdust can vary in terms of its particle size and its moisture content - which may have something to do with it? as for it not causing an explosion when ignited im sure i saw an experiment once where it did indeed explode under lab conditions - but then again perhaps my memeory is fading with age

It's also true that whilst other dusts can be listed by material, sawdust is a generic term meaning dust resulting from sawing. It's what is being sawed that's important

As has previously been stated, differing timber surely would result in differing data ( the oil content of say green pine verus oak for instance may be relevant)

I wonder if TRADA (Timber research people in High Wycombe I think) could help

Generally speaking 40gms per cubic metre is quoted as the lower explosive limit for wood dust in the presence of a spark or flame. This limit does depend on moisture content and particle size.
